If you have an idea of approximately where an underground utility or structure is located, then potholing becomes the method of choice for location.

It is the process of creating a hole of varying diameter in order to expose the target structure or utility. The holes are typically small (6” in diameter) but very cost effective in that a minimum of soil is removed in order to locate and identify the subject location.  Larger diameter holes can be created from this starting point, but clearly controlled by the operator’s actions.
