If you are unsure of the location of the underground utility or structure, but have a good idea of the general vicinity, then slot or line trenching would become the most cost effective option for discovery.

Slot trenches are typically 6” wide and up to 8” deep, allowing a minimal amount of material to be removed. If the utility or structure is deeper, then all the operator needs to do is widen the trench as he probes deeper. The cost effective operation is the removal of minimal amounts of material in order to expose the subject structure.
